Abstract

The proclaimed ennui of the narrator of Potpourri, the detachment and disdain with which he contemplates events are in contrast with the extreme agility of his speech. At the same time, his skepticism to deal with values cherished by contemporary society will turn into a state and demiurgic perspective when he notices that those values are in danger. Once more, adultery puts society and literature in crisis. The only counterbalance to the narrator’s sudden twist is his ubiquitous and protean language that critically covers a wide range of registers, idioms and discursive genres
